Article Pundit Opinions Duel Over Meaning of Growth on TV and Video Viewing

TV Still Video King, YouTube Still Hulu's Daddy By Jason Lee Miller - Fri, 05/22/2009 - 17:38 @ Web Pro News

Examining the recent Nielsen report on TV and Online Video, Jason notes: "According to Nielsen, almost 99 percent of the video watched in the US is on a television. That leaves 1.1 percent for the Internet, and 0.1 percent on mobile devices."

On NewsFactor Network Tech Blog Roundup, Mashable! reports:

"...while TV viewing might still be dominant, online video usage is up by 53 percent since this time last year, and the number of people watching video via cell phones is also up by an impressive 52 percent." - Mashable!

At Contentinople, Ryan Lawler sees the report a bit differently:

Report: Video Viewership Shifts to DVR, Online

He points out: "...the average American watching about 153 hours of traditional linear TV programming every month in the first quarter of 2009. That represents an increase of about two hours and 49 minutes over the first quarter of 2008."

PCMAg.com is happy about the growth in mobile video viewing: Mobile TV Viewing Skyrockets (Finally)

"According to new data from Nielsen's 'Three Screen' report, online video viewing in the U.S. increased 13 percent year-over-year, while mobile jumped more than 50 percent."

Softpedia: Internet Life notes the large potential in the growing mobile video market:

"Mobile video watching is also starting to become popular with the number of people using their phones for this growing by 52.2 percent from last year. Still, with 230 million mobile phone owners in the U.S. and with only 13 million using them to watch videos, there is plenty of space to grow."

An article that got a lot of play last week reproted the current rate of video uploads to YouTube. As reported on Chronicle.com Tech Chonicles:

"Now, it's an eye-busting 20 hours per minute. If you do the math, that's 1,200 hours of video per hour, 28,800 per day and 10.512 million hours per year."

Contentinople's Ryan Lawler has a take on this story, too: YouTube Desperately Seeks More Videos It Can't Monetize

Hulu get some hard analysis from Dawn C. Chmielewski And Meg James of the Los Angeles Times, carried in the Hartford Courant:

TV Industry Scrambling For An Answer To Hulu's Freebies

"With 42 million viewers in March, Hulu whizzed past Yahoo and Microsoft's MSN, and is now nipping at the heels of Google's YouTube."

Other Hulu news includes the first-ever online broadcast of a big-time concert by a popular streaming site. Ars Technica weighs in on the story.

"Whether or not you're a Dave Matthews Band fan, the move is significant in that it's the first major streaming "event" for a mainstream entertainment act. Sure, President Obama's face has graced our computers live many times over the last year or so, but as PaidContent points out, those speeches and debates were offered as a public service."

Modern Views: More people are watching TV without a TV by Paul Farhi of The Washington Post, seen on Morganton.com

He notes that a potential watcher can "cut the cord" because: "...construct an entire TV schedule without ever flicking a remote control. Thanks to dozens of videocasting Web sites such as Hulu, TV.com, Joost and Fancast, full-length episodes of more than 90 percent of the shows carried by the major broadcast networks are legally accessible within a day of being broadcast, according to Forrester Research."

Offbeat News blogger on Examiner.com, Broderick Perkins is bummed by it all:

"TV watchers are giving those Hulu.com aliens just what they want -- to quickly 'transform brains into cottage cheese-like mush you can scoop out with a melon baller.'"

Eric Savitz posts on Barron's Tech Trader Daily, after reading of the report:

"Ye gads, we all need to get a life."
