DVD Review ZOMBIE LAKE (BLU-RAY) ![]() No doubt one of the biggest disasters in the already uneven Jean Rollin catalog, this entry is laughably awful.
Read More... DVD Review WILFRED: THE COMPLETE SERIES ![]() Fans of the U.S version of Wilfred might be interested in checking out this complete - yet brief - run of the original Aussie series, both of which feature co-creator Jason Gann as the pot-smoking dog with the bad attitude.

DVD Review DIRTY MARY CRAZY LARRY/RACE WITH THE DEVIL (BLU-RAY) ![]() Whenever I fondly recall my drive-in movie days from the mid 1970s these are two of the first flicks that come to mind (just after Rock and Roll High School). This double-feature Blu-Ray is one hell of a low-budget joyride, even if the characters in Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Race With The Devil do not have experiences that could be considered particularly joyous.

DVD Review TROUBLED TEENS CLASSIC EDUCATIONAL SHORTS: VOL. 6 ![]() There's generally a kitschy cool to educational shorts, but this batch of teen-themed material is often more of a downer than a laugh-fest. If you're a completist of the series you'll want to pick this up, otherwise I'd say not so much. Read More... DVD Review THE BLOB (BLU-RAY) ![]() Sure, it's stiffly acted and features some of the oldest teenagers ever seen on film, but as a trend-bucking representative sample of 1950s American-made "giant monster" flicks this is a genre classic. Plus, Criterion's Blu-Ray treatment is wonderfully done. Highly recommended. Read More... DVD Review SCHOOLGIRL HITCHHIKERS (BLU-RAY) ![]() A film like Jean Rollin's bizarro Schoolgirl Hitchhikers is something of an acquired taste. If at all. But if you dig the sexy weirdness there's plenty to enjoy.
Read More... DVD Review RULES FOR SCHOOL CLASSIC EDUCATIONAL SHORTS: VOL. 5 ![]() Odds are you either love the bizarre weirdness of vintage educational shorts or you don't. If you do like them then this collection of school-related films is over three hours of what-the-hell-was-that entertainment.
Read More... DVD Review MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE ![]() The redemptive power of music reveals itself behind the rough walls of Angola Prison in this documentary. Read More... DVD Review BAGDAD CAFE ![]() The transfer ain't much but there's a likeable charm to this 1987 indie about a bunch of disparate souls learning how they all need one another.
Read More... DVD Review FOLLOWING (BLU-RAY) ![]() Christopher Nolan's low-budget 16mm debut thriller receives the Blu-Ray treatment from Criterion.
Read More... DVD Review FEMME FATALES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON ![]() I like the premise of this sexy Cinemax anthology quasi-noir series more than I like the actual eps themselves, which is essentially attractive women taking control of various nasty situations, as well as being nude most of the time. They don't call it Skinemax for nothing. Read More... DVD Review WHITE ZOMBIE (BLU-RAY) ![]() Kino may have committed a huge miscue with the rather grotesque digitally restored transfer offered here, but the film remains a classic in its own right. The superb commentary track from film historian Frank Thompson and the unrestored 'raw' print are reason enough to pick this up. Recommended (but certainly NOT for the primary transfer). Read More... DVD Review COSMOPOLIS (BLU-RAY) ![]() I'm a big fan of David Cronenberg, which makes it doubly hard to admit that Cosmopolis left me dulled and only occasionally attentive. The extras, on the other hand, are fantastic. Read More... DVD Review BRAZIL (BLU-RAY) ![]() Without question this is one of my top five favorite films of all time from one of my favorite directors, and Criterion's treatment - now on Blu-Ray - is equally epic.
Read More... DVD Review SLEEPWALK WITH ME (BLU-RAY) ![]() Here's an under-the-radar title that doesn't try to change the world, but instead gives us a likeable, awkward lead character with sleepwalking issues struggling to salvage his romantic relationship as well as find success as a standup comic.
Read More... DVD Review RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION (BLU-RAY 3D + BLU-RAY) ![]() I had very low expectations for this and the experience ended up falling just about where I figured it would. But the image transfer? Flawless. Read More... DVD Review TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (BLU-RAY) ![]() Even if you're not a gearhead (and I most certainly am not) there's an undeniable sense of self-discovery and purpose in Two-Lane Blacktop, a stripped down, revved up love story about men, cars, women, life.
Read More... DVD Review DIE NIBELUNGEN (BLU-RAY) ![]() This is an epic release in every sense of the word, from the history of the films to the scope of the storytelling to the elaborate restoration process.
Read More... DVD Review ROSEMARY'S BABY (BLU-RAY) ![]() Perhaps not the ideal film for expectant mothers to watch, Rosemary's Baby remains a masterful bit of horror that still has the ability to disturb and terrify. And it's even better on Blu-Ray.
Read More... DVD Review WOLF LAKE: THE COMPLETE SERIES ![]() Werewolves. Shapeshifters. That is usually enough to get my interest, but the hook for this set complete series set (nine episodes) of a show dropped after just five episodes were broadcast is the inclusion of the unaired pilot, which shows a path the show could have taken and didn't. Could things have been different? Read More... DVD Review ANCIENT ALIENS: SEASON FOUR (BLU-RAY) ![]() Series writers might be stretching sometimes to fill an hour on a topic occasionally, but pound-for-pound this is easily my favorite History Channel series. Mock it if you want, but this show always makes me think about the big picture just a little bit differently. Read More... DVD Review CHILDREN OF PARADISE (BLU-RAY) (Les Enfants du paradis) ![]() Long considered one of the great films of all time, Marcel Carné's epic drama now gets its finest treatment, courtesy of Criterion. And it is wonderful.
Read More... DVD Review TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES (BLU-RAY) ![]() This surreal vampire project from Jean Rollin never quite achieves the existential heft it tries so hard to deliver. Read More... DVD Review ROCK OF AGES (BLU-RAY+DVD COMBO) ![]() One of the most critically lambasted and dumped-on films of 2012 comes to Blu-Ray with an extended edition (not always a good thing) and after sitting through this choreographed lovefest to big-haired 1980s rock music I have come to one conclusion. Rock of Ages - I liked it. I may be in the minority, but damn it I liked it.
Read More... DVD Review TOMBOY ![]() The bold performance of young Zoé Héran is the centerpiece here in this gentle French film about a 10-year-old girl who pretends to be a boy.
