DVD Review COMMANDO (DIRECTOR'S CUT) ![]() This is Arnold during the peak of his career, meaning a constant mix of bloody action sequences and awesomely horrible one-liners. I'm not sure what extra greatness this "Director's Cut" brings, but here's hoping there's at least something interesting in there. Read More... DVD Review A HAUNTING: THE 2012 SEASON ![]() I haven't exactly heard great things about this show, and it seems awfully derivative of other supernatural reality series, but if it's even the least bit spooky, then I'm definitely on board. Read More... DVD Review BADLANDS (BLU-RAY) ![]() Watching Terrence Malick's early-career classic with a young Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen never gets old, as there's always some tiny nuance to discover. Now, thanks to The Criterion Collection, the film sports a brand new 4K digital transfer, which is all the excuse I need to explore the film yet again. Read More... DVD Review THE LONELIEST PLANET ![]() This film made it on numerous Best of 2012 lists, and deservedly so, as it is a quiet, thought-provoking masterpiece. The only crime is that it there are no plans for a U.S. Blu-ray release. Read More... DVD Review LITTLE WHITE LIES (BLU-RAY) ![]() Let's see if lightning can strike twice for French filmmaker Guillaume Canet, as this time he's tackling an epic drama with a huge, ensemble cast. My money is on the director pulling off such a feat. Read More... DVD Review THE QATSI TRILOGY (BLU-RAY) ![]() I've never experienced director Godfrey Reggio's game-changing, unique trilogy, but there's no better excuse to finally see them than this great new Blu-ray box set from The Criterion Collection. Read More... DVD Review THE DUELLISTS (BLU-RAY) ![]() I'm not sure how this, Ridley Scott's first film, never made it onto my radar, but what better way to watch it for the first time than via this potentially excellent new Blu-ray disc from Shout Factory. Read More... DVD Review THE WHITE MEADOWS (KESHTZAR HAYE SEPID) ![]() While I'm not the world's #1 expert on Iranian film, this supposedly dreamy film promises to be far more than simply a take on the country's current political and social state. Read More... DVD Review WHORE'S GLORY ![]() We all know about the oldest profession in the world, prostitution, but this documentary promises to open our eyes to various international versions of the sex trade, and change the way we look at it in this modern age. Read More... DVD Review THE SEX THIEF (BLU-RAY) ![]() Director Martin Campbell is best known for helming a couple of recent James Bond flicks, but this, his first feature film, is touted as being a great window into his future filmography. Read More... DVD Review SAMSARA (BLU-RAY) ![]() Filmmaker Ron Fricke has a heck of a great track record when it comes to unique films like this, so I imagine this is more of the same enthralling, gorgeous imagery that serves as a stay-at-home trip around the world. Read More... DVD Review BARON BLOOD (BLU-RAY) ![]() It's finally time to retire my old laserdisc copy of Mario Bava's return to gothic form, as this promises to be a wonderful Blu-ray edition from Kino Classics. Read More... DVD Review THE TIN DRUM (BLU-RAY) ![]() I'm excited to finally see this infamous, controversial film, and, given The Criterion Collection's involvement, this disc will make it well worth the wait. Read More... DVD Review WAR OF THE DEAD (BLU-RAY) ![]() This sure seems like an interesting, shockingly original take on the soon-to-be-tired zombie film, but my gut tells me that there won't be much here to like. Read More... DVD Review THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (BLU-RAY) ![]() One of Hitchcock's early thrillers and Peter Lorre's first English-language picture, this is sure to be another excellent effort by The Criterion Collection. I certainly can't wait to see what they've done with the video restoration. Read More... DVD Review BASKET CASE 2 ![]() This second installment of the adventures of everyone's favorite surgically separated conjoined twins takes the weirdness level up a few notches, to say the least. Read More... DVD Review HEMPSTERS: PLANT THE SEED ![]() The topic of marijuana legalization has never been more of a hot-button issue than it is today, and this documentary promises to delve into the subject down to its core. It'll be interesting to see just how politically driven the film turns out to be. Read More... DVD Review MANSON ![]() I've always been aware of the Manson Family murders, but I've never had a direct knowledge of the minute details behind them. I have a feeling, despite some assumedly awful acting during the dramatization portions of this film, I'll know a lot more once it's finished. Read More... DVD Review RASHOMON (BLU-RAY) ![]() It took longer than we wanted, but Kurosawa's influential, twisty masterpiece is finally available on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection. It's also certainly no surprise that this 62-year-old film has never looked or sounded better. Read More... DVD Review ELENA ![]() I'm always up for a good foreign thriller, and everything I've heard about this in the past year or so has my anticipation level near its highest point. Read More... DVD Review VISIONS OF ECSTASY (The Films of Nigel Wingrove) ![]() This short, experimental film has been tough to get a hold of for years, thanks, in large part, to it being banned in the UK. Now that such a ban has been lifted, we can see for ourselves what the fuss was all about. Read More... DVD Review THE PACT (BLU-RAY) ![]() This creepy flick got the raw end of the deal with a miniscule theatrical release earlier this year. It deserved much more and will hopefully garner a much bigger audience via IFC's Blu-ray release. Read More... DVD Review THE HEINEKEN KIDNAPPING (BLU-RAY) ![]() Yes, folks, even seemingly ageless actors like Rutger Hauer get older, but he seems to be aging gracefully, leading up this fictionalized version of the most publicized abduction to ever occur in the Netherlands. Read More... DVD Review IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (BLU-RAY) ![]() The great Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece was given the proper Criterion Collection treatment on DVD a few years ago, and is one of their banner releases. It now shows up on a Criterion Blu-ray disc, and I'd be shocked if it wasn't even more special than the first time. Read More... DVD Review NEIL YOUNG JOURNEYS (BLU-RAY) ![]() Director Jonathan Demme took a great Talking Heads concert and made it better.
