DVD Review: RED SCORPION (BLU-RAY/DVD COMBO)

Fans of late-1980s action flicks should be quite pleased with Synapse Films impressive restoration and overall treatment of Dolph Lundgren's Red Scorpion, available in a new Blu-Ray/DVD Combo pack carrying an uncensored version that can be had for less than fifteen bucks.

Recommended for all those who appreciate the genre.

DVD Review: SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA

Spartacus: Gods of the Area serves as a prequel, a continuation and an introduction to the Spartacus series. Definitely, if you don't like sex and violence in your televsion, then do not watch this show which from the first scene contains copious amounts of both. Featuring a hyper-reality graphic novel style and well-written characters, the mini-series fills the gap between the original show and the upcoming 2013 second season.

DVD Review: SUPER (BLU-RAY)

It may seem that the superhero parody genre is pretty one-note and tired, but Troma vet James Gunn seems very comfortable in that area, having also written the completely underrated The Specials. As writer/director Gunn unleashes Super - with Rainn Wilson as a wannabe crimefighter - a weirdly addictive mix of humor, violence and drama with a terrific cast that is just perverse and left-of-center enough that it deserves to become a veritable cult classic.

Highly recommended.

Kim Jee-woon nails the whole American/spaghetti western mythos, only here set in the rough and tumble gun-toting world of 1930's Manchuria. Crammed with nonstop action and terrific comedy, this is the kind of joyous absurdity of well-choreographed excess that makes me absolutely love movies.

One of the most over-the-top cool titles of 2010. Bar none.

DVD Review: LAW ABIDING CITIZEN

I can forgive the grand silliness of this film's big reveal because I like the way this one moves along so quickly, and Gerard Butler is excellent as a man who just wants a little eye-for-eye revenge. Fast-paced and generally quite entertaining, it may not be the most believable vengeance flick ever made, but its joyously explosive dumbness makes it well worth a rental.
