DVD Review: ROCK OF AGES (BLU-RAY+DVD COMBO)

One of the most critically lambasted and dumped-on films of 2012 comes to Blu-Ray with an extended edition (not always a good thing) and after sitting through this choreographed lovefest to big-haired 1980s rock music I have come to one conclusion. Rock of Ages - I liked it. I may be in the minority, but damn it I liked it.

Say it loud, say it proud: recommended.

DVD Review: MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE (BLU-RAY)

This one got a lot of buzz because writer/director Emily Hagins was just 17 (or 18 depending on what you read) when it was made. That sort of overshadowed the film itself. Sure, My Sucky Teen Romance is often uneven and amateurish in spots - and shows the limitations of a rookie director without much capital - but if you look through all of that the result shows a fresh, creative filmmaker with a keen eye for the genre and a whole helluva lot of promise.

Kattapacalypse is pretty funny, but ultimately unsatisfying and not worthy of multiple viewings. Katt Williams is a funny dude but his material here is choppy and disjointed. He comes onto the stage like a lion abut by the end is laying down with the lambs.

DVD Review: THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (BLU-RAY)

It doesn't matter to me one bit that this Criterion Blu-Ray of Wes Anderson's colorfully brilliant The Royal Tenenbaums has the same extras as their 2002 SD release because the new director-approved transfer is quite simply: stunning.

Highly recommended - and one of the best Blu-Rays of 2012.

As a sci-fi parody this uneven comedy isn't Mel Brooks' finest work, but that's not to say it is not without its pleasantly juvenile merits. Sadly, however, this anniversary packaging doesn't offer much not already presented in the 2009 BD release, making it seem somewhat pointless.

It's an outrageous stoner-slacker-office comedy from Comedy Central that explodes in outrageous situations and bits that are as off-the-wall as could ever be hoped for or expected. It's good just to laugh. It doesn't have to mean anything. There is explicit content and it is recommended for mature audiences... yeah right.
