DVD Review PIERRE ETAIX (BLU-RAY)

I'd honestly never heard of Pierre Etaix prior to learning of this Criterion Collection release, but after hearing him compared to legendary physical comedians Jacques Tati and Jerry Lewis, I can't wait to delve into all eight of the films in this robust, nicely-packaged set.

BADLANDS (BLU-R

Watching Terrence Malick's early-career classic with a young Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen never gets old, as there's always some tiny nuance to discover. Now, thanks to The Criterion Collection, the film sports a brand new 4K digital transfer, which is all the excuse I need to explore the film yet again.

DVD Review SANSHO THE BAILIFF (BLU-RAY)

This classic film gets the red carpet treatment, courtesy of the best in the business, The Criterion Collection. While I've yet to experience director Kenjo Mizoguchi's legendary movie, this Blu-ray disc is likely the best way to do so.

DVD Review THE QATSI TRILOGY (BLU-RAY)

THE QATSI TRILO

I've never experienced director Godfrey Reggio's game-changing, unique trilogy, but there's no better excuse to finally see them than this great new Blu-ray box set from The Criterion Collection.

THE SEX THIEF (

Director Martin Campbell is best known for helming a couple of recent James Bond flicks, but this, his first feature film, is touted as being a great window into his future filmography.

I'm excited to finally see this infamous, controversial film, and, given The Criterion Collection's involvement, this disc will make it well worth the wait.

DVD Review THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (BLU-RAY)

THE MAN WHO KNE

One of Hitchcock's early thrillers and Peter Lorre's first English-language picture, this is sure to be another excellent effort by The Criterion Collection. I certainly can't wait to see what they've done with the video restoration.

RASHOMON (BLU-R

It took longer than we wanted, but Kurosawa's influential, twisty masterpiece is finally available on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection. It's also certainly no surprise that this 62-year-old film has never looked or sounded better.

DVD Review IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (BLU-RAY)

IN THE MOOD FOR

The great Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece was given the proper Criterion Collection treatment on DVD a few years ago, and is one of their banner releases. It now shows up on a Criterion Blu-ray disc, and I'd be shocked if it wasn't even more special than the first time.

DVD Review FEAR AND DESIRE (BLU-RAY)

FEAR AND DESIRE

The legendary Stanley Kubrick's first feature film finally makes its way to Blu-ray, after being virtually unseen since it first showed up in theaters back in 1953. The fact that Kino has thrown in a documentary short by Kubrick as well, makes this realease one of the easier purchasing decisions of the year.

It's great to see The Criterion Collection continue to release relatively obscure foreign films like this, regardless of their box office numbers. It would be a shock if this wasn't yet another one of their excellent Blu-ray efforts.

DVD Review UP ALL NIGHT WITH ROBERT DOWNEY SR. (ECLIPSE SERIES 33)

UP ALL NIGHT WI

Experimental and subversive, but more than that...funny. Robert Downey, Sr.'s output in the 60s and 70s makes for some of the best underground filmmaking of the era.

I'm ashamed to say I'm never seen a movie either starring Charlie Chaplin or directed by him. What better way to finally break the seal on this cinema legend than with what many consider to be a comedic masterwork.

DVD Review A HOLLIS FRAMPTON ODYSSEY (BLU-RAY)

A HOLLIS FRAMPT

The Criterion Collection has gone the avant-garde short film route before, so I'm sure their collection of iconic American filmmaker Hollis Frampton's best works is sure to dazzle film fans on Blu-ray.

Article Obsessed with Girls on HBO much?

It's good to have a few shows littered around the week to look forward to for their reasonably compelling entertainment value. HBO is serving up two on Sunday night with old pro Julia Louis-Dreyfus on Veep and those madcap Girls who are taking the Internet by storm. How did this jaded writer who hates everything, get obsessed with
Girls. It might just be their charm.

This is one of those classics of foreign cinema that I've known about since I was a kid, but have never actually seen. What better way to experience all 3-plus hours of this masterpiece for the first time than via a Criterion Collection Blu-ray.

DVD Review LA JETÉE/SANS SOLEIL (BLU-RAY)

LA JETÉE/SANS S

Chris Marker's 28-minute 1962 film La Jetée is the centerpiece of this Blu-Ray doublebill from Criterion, which also features his full-length 1983 film Sans Soleil. What makes this such an interesting release is the way these two very different films so perfectly intertwine - made over a period of decades - into a complex expression of time, memory and remembering.
