DVD Review

One of the fan-favorite segments of The Man Show is the traditional closing segment of girls jumping on trampolines. A sizable portion of that show's audience has no doubt said to itself, "You know, if they made an entire show of nothing but girls jumping on trampolines, I'd watch that." And another sizable contingent of guys (probably overlapping significantly with the last group) says, "Why the heck is the bonus footage of topless trampoline jumpers on the Season One discs for the show censored with pixelation?" What I'm not sure about is whether there is yet another group that says, "And what I REALLY want is for it all to be set to Christmas carols!" Should there be anyone that fits all three categories, well, The Man Show has answered your prayers.

Yes, here is close to 44 minutes of nothing, I tell you nothing but girls jumping on trampolines, in various states of dress and undress, including uncensored toplessness, all set to holiday music performed in rock versions. There's really not much else to say about this production, since it absolutely delivers what the front cover promises. On the other hand, it doesn't begin to deliver the 90 minutes that the back of the keepcase promises, shorting that by more than half (though the disc does automatically loop so you may not notice immediately). Even if you count the bonus segments, it's nowhere close to 90 minutes.

As far as the program itself, there are plenty of costumes worn and removed. Some may be offended by the combination of sexiness and religious holidays (e.g., The Hanukkah Song features a girl in a bustier with strategically-placed Stars of David). The ten or so jumping ladies are all quite attractive and provide a variety of physical types for your viewing pleasure. Oddly, several of the young women keeping fit are unnaturally enhanced, which really defeats the purpose of the entire exercise. For an extended joke, it's not half bad. The substance grade is on the curve, which is to say it's not graded for the average viewer but for someone who knows that they'd like to see it based on the title. One grade is docked for silicone and half a grade for the fib about the running time.

Image Transfer Review: The full-frame transfer looks pretty good, with plenty of good color and decent detail. There's some blurriness, but that's a result of the slow-motion effects applied to the jumping girls. I didn't notice any other significant artifacting, nor any edge (as opposed to other) enhancement.

Audio Transfer Review: There's a 2.0 music score that is firmly grounded in the center and has little directionality and a narrow soundstage. The bass comes through loud and clear, and the drums sound OK if not spectacular. The lead guitar has good presence and sounds fine. Hiss and noise are appropriately nonexistent.

Extras Review: There are a few modest bonus materials, the most significant of which is a featurette running 8m:07s. This includes behind-the-scenes footage of setting up the trampolines and doing makeup, followed by quick interview snippets with the jumping girls (on terra firma). These cover such topics as their first time on the trampoline, what they look for in a man or woman, turnons and turnoffs, and to demonstrate their intellectual prowess, the square root of 9 (which a little over half of them manage to identify). A useless montage of photos runs about 3m:35s and the package is supplemented by a silly game to guess the bra sizes of the jumpers.

Extras Grade: D+

Final Comments

Yes, girls on trampolines, and more girls on trampolines. Not nearly as much of it as promised on the keepcase, but here it is, uncensored and in living color.
