LOS ANGELES (July 5, 2011) -- Acclaimed two-time Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb successfully reunites the same three brothers from his Oscar® nominated feature DAYS OF GLORY (2006) in the stand-alone and controversial action flick, Outside the Law (Hors-La-Loi), which sparked demonstrations and protests when it played at the Cannes Film Festival last year. With an estimated budget reported to be approximately $30 million dollars, Bouchareb's latest will be released on August 2nd on DVD for $24.98 SRP and Blu-ray™ for $27.98 SRP.

Cohen Media Group has partnered with Palisades Tartan to bring this exquisite film to Blu-ray and DVD.

Palisades Tartan's experience in the world cinema category and their strong consumer following made them the right home for our first home video release in North America, said Charles S. Cohen, Chairman and CEO of Cohen Media Group.

The historical and social relevance of this film and its very commercial storytelling is what drew us to the film, added Soumya Sriraman, President/CEO, Palisades Tartan Films.

FROM WIKIPEDIA / ABOUT THE FILM:
Outside the Law (Hors-La-Loi) is a 2010 drama film directed by Rachid Bouchareb, starring Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem and Sami Bouajila. The story takes place between 1945 and 1962 and focuses on the lives of three Algerian brothers in France, set to the backdrop of the Algerian independence movement and the Algerian War. It is a standalone follow-up to Bouchareb's 2006 film Days of Glory, which was set during World War II. Outside the Law was a French majority production with co-producers in Algeria, Tunisia and Belgium.

A historically unorthodox portrayal of the 1945 Sétif massacre sparked a political controversy in France. Outside the Law represented Algeria at the 83rd Academy Awards, and was one of the Final 5 nominees for Best Foreign Language Film.

Pacifist and Congresswoman Jeanette Rankin, who in 1916 became the first woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, once famously stated, You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake (Legacy.com) and Bouchareb's sweeping epic illustrates that sentiment. Bouchareb and co-writer Olivier Lorelle did extensive research and interviewed many eyewitnesses prior to creating this tale about three brothers who happen to find themselves in the center of events leading up to Algeria's 1962 independence.

Outside the Law (Hors-La-Loi) was an Official Selection of the Cannes, Toronto and Tribeca Doha Film Festivals (2010) and received a platform theatrical release in North America courtesy of Cohen Media Group across 20+ markets.

SYNOPSIS:
In 1925 an Algerian farmer and his three young sons are forced to surrender land that had been in their family for generations to France. When Europe is liberated twenty years later, many Algerians, including the farmer, take to the streets demanding national independence, but are savagely gunned down by the French police. The three sons still tormented by the loss of their beloved land and now their father, respond very differently to the building resistance. Recently released from prison and hardened by the deaths of his compatriots, Abdelkader (Sami Bouajila), becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement and orchestrates assassinations and bombings to further their cause. His older brother Messaoud (Roschdy Zem), now a veteran of France's failed Indochina campaign and a father, soon joins his brother's side, but abhors the violence he feels he must employ in order to give his son a better life. Said (Jamel Debbouze), the youngest brother and family rebel chooses to forgo killing for capital and becomes a nightclub owner and boxing promoter. Eventually the trio finds themselves reunited in Paris where a furious war for freedom will take its toll on both victims and perpetrators in equal measure.

ABOUT PALISADES TARTAN
Palisades Tartan has emerged as one of the premier distributors of independent and arthouse cinema in North America and the UK and has been on the forefront of consumer trends. Straddling both continents, their film line-up boasts an impressive repertoire in the UK including the Ingmar Bergman library and Wong Kar Wai's 2046 and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. In North America, apart from many favorites such as Michael Winterbottom's 9 SONGS and Carlos Reygadas's SILENT LIGHT, the library is anchored by Park Chan-wook's Cannes jury prize winner, OLDBOY, the film that famously introduced the Western World to the Asia Extreme brand.

Tartan Films was originally founded in 1984 in the UK and is credited with bringing Asian Extreme film to the West as well as some of the most compelling art house films of the last quarter century. In May 2008, Palisades Pictures acquired Tartan Films US library assets and two months later, acquired a majority of Tartan Films UK's film library assets. The new company Palisades Tartan has operations both nationally and internationally.

Palisades Tartan will continue to expand an already distinctive and provocative slate of films by focusing on quality film acquisitions, thus significantly increasing the size of their overall library in both territories. Palisades Pictures and its parent company Palisades Media Corp is a prestigious financier of print & advertising for the independent film market. Together with its affiliate, Palisades Media Asset Fund, Palisades has securitized and financed more than 550 films. www.PalisadesTartan.com
