We all know about the oldest profession in the world, prostitution, but this documentary promises to open our eyes to various international versions of the sex trade, and change the way we look at it in this modern age.

Movie Grade: A-

DVD Grade: B

Prostitution is, indeed, the oldest profession in the world, and there have been plenty of films, both fictional and documentary, focusing on the subject. The newest of these, 2012’s Whore’s Glory, focuses on the “world” part of the aforementioned oldest profession cliché. The film takes us across the globe to Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico, giving us extremely candid, explicit looks at the lengths these women go to just to make a living. This is harrowing, often extremely sad material, but, in some cases, there’s actually a sense of hope and joy in what they do, making for an emotional rollercoaster at times.

The most interesting aspect of Whore’s Glory is the contrast in living conditions between the three locations that are chronicled. We start in Thailand, where, despite being treated as numbered sex objects; menu items, if you will, the girls working in this fancy club in Bangkok live a posh life compared to those using sex to make a living in Bangladesh and Mexico. Sure, the ladies in Thailand aren’t exactly getting all (or much) of the money that their clients are paying to those running the brothel, as they long for a different career (namely massage) that pays better, but they’re at least living in nice conditions. The ladies in Bangladesh, many of which are young girls, seem to be working out of their small homes, and those in the poverty-stricken border town of Reynosa, Mexico spend much of their free time smoking crack and praying to Lady Death. It was an interesting, extremely effective choice by writer/director Michael Glawogger to show us Thailand first and eventually make our way to the dregs of Mexico last, and this choice single-handedly makes Whore’s Glory one of the best documentaries of 2012.

Kino Lorber brings Whore’s Glory to DVD in fine fashion, beginning with a great 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen video presentation. Despite the varying quality of the locations that the film was shot at, image detail is surprisingly impressive. Nice contrast and black levels also persist, and colors are beautifully rendered at times. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is an even bigger surprise as some excellent music by PJ Harvey and other great musicians sounds fantastic here. This music benefits from nice dynamic range, deep bass, and it blends in perfectly with the crystal clear dialogue. The only extras here are a stills gallery and trailers for Whore’s Glory and the Kino releases, Elles and Meet the Fokkens.
