TROUBLED TEENS CLASSIC EDUCATIONAL SHORTS: VOL. 6 ![]() There's generally a kitschy cool to educational shorts, but this batch of teen-themed material is often more of a downer than a laugh-fest. If you're a completist of the series you'll want to pick this up, otherwise I'd say not so much. Read More... RULES FOR SCHOOL CLASSIC EDUCATIONAL SHORTS: VOL. 5 ![]() Odds are you either love the bizarre weirdness of vintage educational shorts or you don't. If you do like them then this collection of school-related films is over three hours of what-the-hell-was-that entertainment.
Read More... ![]() Kino may have committed a huge miscue with the rather grotesque digitally restored transfer offered here, but the film remains a classic in its own right. The superb commentary track from film historian Frank Thompson and the unrestored 'raw' print are reason enough to pick this up. Recommended (but certainly NOT for the primary transfer). Read More... ![]() This is an epic release in every sense of the word, from the history of the films to the scope of the storytelling to the elaborate restoration process.
Read More... ![]() This surreal vampire project from Jean Rollin never quite achieves the existential heft it tries so hard to deliver. Read More... ![]() The legendary Stanley Kubrick's first feature film finally makes its way to Blu-ray, after being virtually unseen since it first showed up in theaters back in 1953. The fact that Kino has thrown in a documentary short by Kubrick as well, makes this realease one of the easier purchasing decisions of the year. Read More... THE LIVING DEAD GIRL (BLU-RAY) ![]() Jean Rollin is held in high esteem by a lot of horror fans, but I've never found his films to excite me the way they do others. Redemption/Kino's Blu-Ray treatment of The Living Dead Girl sure looks great - and the women are attractive - but the film plods along slowly.
Read More... ![]() Louis Feuillade's ten-part crime thriller serial from 1915/1916 remains a hellzapoppin' funhouse ride nearly 100 years later, but one character in particular steals the 7-hour show.
Read More... THE DEVIL'S NEEDLE AND OTHER TALES OF VICE AND REDEMPTION (BLU-RAY) ![]() None of these films is a masterpiece, nor are they in the best shape after almost a century of neglect. Nevertheless, they're extraordinary time capsules of a more liberal era. Read More... ![]() This is a curiosity, if nothing else. It is a fairly straightforward recitation of the legend of those famous 1800s-era-Scotland/dead-body-sellers William Burke and William Hare, mixed with some tired attempts at humor and frequent nudity. Read More... ![]() This contemplative but unpretentious film goes behind-the-scenes at the Louvre museum. Director Nicolas Philipert documents a vibrant community--an entire world--that tourists never see. Read More... THE CELLULOID SALESMAN Classic Educational Shorts, Volume 4 ![]() Volume 4 of Kino's Classic Educational Shorts series tackles the art of the sell, all amidst a wonderfully bizarre collection of vintage infotainment
Read More... ![]() A solid sea yarn from the silent era gets regal treatment from Kino on Blu-Ray, featuring an impressive transfer of the original two-strip Technicolor print and yet another film geek history lesson commentary from Rudy Behlmer.
Read More... ![]() Many will question what an oft-abused silent film could possibly benefit from a high-def presentation. The answer is right here in this brilliant restoration of a brutal propaganda classic. Read More... SAYURI ICHIJO: FOLLOWING DESIRE ![]() The cultural shock value of Tatsumi Kumashiro's sexy Pink Cinema title may have lost a little in the subsequent decades, but it remains a groovy little B-movie about the Japanese strip club scene in 1972. Read More... ![]() What happens when you combine equal parts surreal weirdness and madness-tinged horror? You get Graham Reznick... Read More... ![]() Up close and personal with one of the great temptresses in the history of the big screen. Read More... ![]() This is really all about Emily Hubley's wonderful animation, and if you're looking for a meditative experience this could merit a rental. Read More... ![]() Sometimes a positive quote by a reviewer on the front of a DVD case is enough to instantly grab my attention, and I'm hoping this more than lives up to such praise. Read More... EXTREME ANIMATION: FILMS BY PHIL MULLOY ![]() No one can ever accuse animator Phil Mulloy of being traditional or subtle, as witnessed by this wonderfully bizarro collection of short films. Read More... ![]() While Arthur Conan Doyle's detective was a huge hit in print, many of the enduring qualities that are featured in the movies and television presentations had their roots in the play by William Gillette. Kino provides us with a new restoration of the filmed version starring the legendary John Barrymore. But is it a Jekyll or a Hyde?
Read More... ![]() The fall of the Tsars has proven to be fertile ground for filmic drama, but one of the earlier of these efforts was John Barrymore's Tempest, produced only a decade after the events depicted. With a story written by a Russian, and a screenplay co-written by an uncredited Erich von Stroheim, it certainly promises to be interesting.
