DVD Review

Colin Malone is the infamous scruffy host of a wildly successful L.A.-based cable television program called Colin's Sleazy Friends. The premise is simple and remarkably ingenious, and is really nothing more than comically coarse and sexually descriptive interviews with an assorted mixture of rock stars and porn stars, layered with excessive nudity. It may not be what could be considered high-brow entertainment, but it has a humor level that is so base and juvenile in its approach to sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll that is at times nothing short of hypnotic; you know you should turn it off, but you just want to watch one more segment.

This collection of random clips, spanning 1997 through 2002, is presented in no particular order, with only Malone's dramatically varying lengths of hair as any indication of time passage. Each interview segment covers the same general path, as Malone leads the conversations along with graphically sexual questions that are met with equally frank and refreshingly honest responses. If a porn star is present (which is the norm) she will be prompted to disrobe to proudly display her breasts, that is if she isn't nude already.

Malone does talk to a number of high-profile acts (Insane Clown Posse, New Found Glory, Alien Ant Farm, David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, Cypress Hill, Linkin Park, Disturbed, and Poison to name a few), but if you're looking for straightforward interviews you should look elsewhere. The raw sexual nature of the conversations with the rockers is admittedly pretty funny, and Malone will never be accused of shying away from an embarrassing question (most of which can't be printed here).

Oh yes, don't forget the gaggle of porn stars highlighted on this disc, which are really Malone's proverbial bread-and-butter. The dirty talk with rock stars is fun, but what is it without nude women, right? Well, that's Malone's philosophy, apparently. Big name porn queens like Tabitha Stevens, Tyffany Mynx, and Kendra Jade appear along side various rock stars, and the segment with adult film star Houston displaying her latex replica of her (ahem) nether region is about as surreal and weird as they come. This scene is dipped further into the bizarre realm as Poison's Rikki Rockett and Malone demonstrate how Houston's product works, using a pair of drum sticks.

I'm not going to come off high and mighty and say that Colin's Sleazy Friends Rocks is beneath me, or that this represents all that is wrong with society. As late night viewing, with a group of friends and a few cold brews, this is nasty, crude and undeniably funny.

Image Transfer Review: Except for a couple of brief segments shown in nonanamorphic widescreen, the rest of this disc is shown in 1.33:1 full-frame. Image quality varies from interview to interview, and most of the footage has a rough, low-budget video feel to it. The presence of plenty of nekkid women will distract even the most nitpicky (male) viewer, and if you're watching this expecting stunning image quality you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

All in all, it's just fine for the material presented.

Audio Transfer Review: Audio is presented in a decent PCM track, but certainly far from perfect. Sound quality varies from clip to clip, with occasional hollowness or distortion. The scenes recorded outdoors (like the Cypress Hill segment at The Rainbow) sound much better than those done indoors, but in general the whole things sounds no better than something you might have shot yourself with your own home equipment.

Extras Review: Colin Malone and porn star Tabitha Stevens provide a full-length commentary, and while the presence of more Colin is moderately funny, more Tabitha borders on the purely annoying. Most of the commentary centers on who Stevens has had sex with, and her grating, semi-whining delivery is a tough listen, even while Malone eggs her on incessantly with a string of crude questions. She does offer up some dirt on Corey Feldman that might pique his lawyers interest, and her analysis of fellow porn star Chloe's sexual technique is the equivalent of listening to a football player dissecting game films.

Also included is a full episode of Colin's Sleazy Friends (18m:55s), featuring Chino and Stephan from The Deftones, along with porn stars Nikki Sinn, Summer Knight and Roxanne Hall. This segment begins fairly tame (for Colin Malone, anyways) but soon turns into an all-out mass of undulating nude flesh and gyrating nether regions, and is probably the closest most of us will get to seeing what we imagine goes on in just about every rock tour bus on a nightly basis.

A brief Photo Gallery and three songs from Dr. Mixx (which are used repeatedly on this disc) are also available, as well as a couple of trailers for additional Colin Malone projects (Cooking with Porn Stars, Colin's Sleazy Friends: Raw & Extreme).

The authoring of this disc is atrocious, and it doesn't allow the viewer to return to the main menu during normal playback. The only way to return to the main menu is to chapter all the way through to the final one (there are 23), which is a pain. Similarly, while attempting to listen to some of the three music tracks, I was unable to return to the main menu until the song ended.

Still, even with the horrible menu system, the extras are somewhat worth it just for the bonus episode with The Deftones, which quickly degenerates into pure, unadulterated rock debauchery.

Final Comments

While Ian Dury just sang about Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Colin Malone lives it. If you like to watch interviews that revolve around sex, sex and occasionally drugs, and that feature nude porn stars, then Colin's Sleazy Friends Rocks is for you.

You probably won't want to admit you watched it, let alone enjoyed it. But I know better...
