DVD Review

The juggernaut that is Sailor Moon rolls on in the thirteenth installment, bringing another five episodes. The Sailor Scouts continue to battle the evil Emerald and the Negamoon, taking their fight to the future as the series moves into its final chapters.

The Albert Einstein school for gifted children becomes Emerald's latest target, causing Melvin to accuse Amy of cheating in school, and turning all her classmates against her. With only the Scouts believing in Amy's innocence, Emerald's drone uses her hallucination powers to trick Sailor Mercury into fighting against her friends.

The Scouts are happy that Rini has finally found a friend her own age, but worry about the enemies that are still after her. Emerald employs her latest minions, Doom and Gloom, to take care of the problematic Sailor Scouts, and they turn their forces of negativity against Rini's school, unleashing a power no one knew existed.

After some initial apprehension, Rini, the Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Mask travel to the future to save Rini's mother, but the forces of the Negamoon plan to bring Rini over to their purposes. Prince Diamond has his eyes on Sailor Moon, but Emerald wants to spoil the occasion by getting the group lost in the time warp.

Now in the Crystal Tokyo, the Scouts come face to face with their future selves, including Darien as King of the Earth. The 30th century holds some big surprises, as revelations about the world fall into place. The Scouts get their new mission, but Prince Diamond tries to convert Serena to the dark side.

Finally, the mystery of the Silver Crystal's whereabouts begins to unfold, as Wiseman probes Rini's mind for the truth. The events that led to the fall of the city come to light, as the evil faction's agendas go into play.

After a couple of pretty standard installments, the Crystal Tokyo arc begins, filling in the background of the Silver Crystal and the Negamoon family. The romantic elements get a boost as Serena and Darien's story is unveiled, and Rini's part in the plot becomes more clear. After a fair amount of filler on preceding discs, things get more interesting as the exposition expands, and character's motives begin to crystalize, relegating the monster of the week formula to a less prevalent role. That isn't to say the traditional battle sequences disappear, but they become less of a focus. Wiseman's part gets set up for the grand finale on the next disc.

Image Transfer Review: Image quality is consistent with previous discs. Colors are muted but well rendered, and black levels are respectable. There is some minor rainbowing, a bit of jitter in the outlines in places, and some minor print damage. Overall this is pretty good.

Final Comments

The Sailor Scouts find themselves in the future—literally. The action is picking up as the end of the series becomes imminent, with five more installments of Sailor Moon. The plot is being laid on thick as all the previous foreshadowing gets sorted out, and the set up is in place for the exciting conclusion.
