NOVA scienceNOW HELPS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT HAS PLAGUED HUMANS FOR YEARS – "WHERE DID WE COME FROM?"

Available on DVD from PBS Distribution March 29, 2011

Arlington, Va, February 28, 2011 – This March, PBS Distribution releases on DVD NOVA scienceNOW's challenging and intriguing program about one of the most prolific questions of all time, "Where Did We Come From?." The 60 minute program takes viewers on a journey with scientists that could bring us much closer to understanding how the earliest life forms emerged billions of years ago. The DVD will be available beginning March 29, 2011.

Episode Synopsis Where did the very first living thing on Earth come from? A landmark discovery by a chemist has yielded a new kind of "recipe" for natural processes to assemble and create the building blocks of life – something that could bring us closer than ever before in examining our evolution. NOVA scienceNOW also examines how head lice, a creepy critter that's been sucking our blood for millions of years, is suddenly proving to be a treasure trove of clues about our evolution.

In yet another groundbreaking discovery, neuroscientist André Fenton proves whether a simple injection can erase a painful memory. However, should humans harness the power to erase our past? Host Neil deGrasse Tyson also brings viewers on a journey back in time to the birth of our solar system to explore whether the key to our planet's existence could be the epic explosive shockwave of an ancient supernova.

About NOVA scienceNOW This season, NOVA scienceNOW tackles some of the biggest questions on people's minds in six specially-themed new episodes. Hosted by engaging astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the series presents a variety of sequences each week around a particular, thought-provoking topic--pondering who we are, how we got here, and where things are going. As always, each show delves into the latest scientific breakthroughs that could contribute to a better understanding of ourselves and our place within the universe. The six big questions this season include: "Can We Make it to Mars?," "Can We Live Forever?," "How Does the Brain Work?," "How Smart are Animals?," "Where Did We Come From?," and "What's the Next Big Thing?."

FROM FRIENDLY ROBOTS TO BETTER EARTHQUAKE DETECTION, NOVA scienceNOW EXAMINES "WHAT'S THE NEXT BIG THING?"

Available on DVD from PBS Distribution March 29, 2011 Arlington, Va., February 28, 2011 – Thrilling innovations and new discoveries are being made constantly. There are a few things on the horizon in the fields of medicine, technology and energy that are poised to change the way we live. NOVA scienceNOW takes viewers on an exciting expedition into the laboratories of the great thinkers of our day to find out what may be ahead in "What's the Next Big Thing?." The 60 minute DVD will be available beginning March 29, 2011.

Episode Synopsis Viewers will meet the engineers designing social robots with the smarts to understand human feelings, learn from human teachers, carry on conversations and even make jokes. Robots already build our cars and vacuum our floors. One day soon, they could also serve as teachers' helpers, companions for the elderly and even babysitters. NOVA scienceNOW also asks if the car of the future will be able to drive itself. The team heads to the General Motors Tech Center, where engineers are testing tiny, two-wheeled, battery-powered cars called EN-Vs, which one day might drive themselves through city streets. Then, Nebraska native Jay Keasling, a leading pioneer in the cutting-edge field of synthetic biology, shares his work on developing "designer" microbes that generate biofuels and medicines, which could save millions of lives and dollars with low-cost malaria drugs and clean-burning fuels.

NOVA scienceNOW also takes an intriguing look at the science used by geologists to forecast earthquakes such as the devastating quake in Haiti in January 2010. Scientists had forecast that tragedy with amazing accuracy two years earlier. NOVA scienceNOW shares exclusive coverage obtained while accompanying geologists as they first entered Haiti, and then travels to where scientists are digging deep underground and uncovering weaknesses that could soon cause massive destruction in California.

American Experience examines Civil War foes in "Lee & Grant: Generals of the Civil War" a SPECIAL TWO-DISC SET

2011 is the 150th Anniversary of the Beginning of the Civil War

Available on DVD from PBS Distribution on March 29, 2011

Arlington, Va. – February 28, 2011 – Step behind the battle lines with generals on both sides of the Civil War as AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents "LEE & GRANT: GENERALS OF THE CIVIL WAR." The first DVD portrays Ulysses S. Grant, the greatest Union hero of the Civil War, while the second DVD depicts Robert E. Lee, the scourge of the Union and hero of the Confederacy. This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE DVD set examines the lives, achievements, and reputations of these unforgettable generals. "LEE & GRANT: GENERALS OF THE CIVIL WAR" will be available from PBS Distribution on March 29, 2011. The program has a running time of 360 minutes on two discs and a suggested retail price of $29.99.

Grant Synopsis Ulysses S. Grant was a brilliant military strategist who rose from obscurity to a rank held previously only by George Washington. His hard-nosed fighting style won him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant and the admiration of the northern public. However, the strength of the Confederate resistance forced Grant into a hard war that destroyed the south and led to his being labeled a butcher. As the author of the great Union victory at Vicksburg, which etched his name in military history, he irrevocably altered the course of the war. Perhaps most memorably, he was the general who took Lee's surrender at Appomattox. This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film paints a revealing portrait of one of America's most paradoxical leaders, from his first days on the Ohio frontier to the darkest days of the Civil War.

Lee Synopsis This DVD explores, in depth, the life of this leader who changed America forever. Universally, historians consider Robert E. Lee to be the greatest general of the Civil War, and it is agreed that his military genius was a principal factor in keeping the Confederacy alive. One of a handful of Civil War generals with the imagination to conceive a grand military strategy, he had the focus to plan a large campaign and the energy to drive it. He inspired the unquestioned loyalty of the men who fought beneath him, but drove his soldiers beyond the logistical capacity they could muster. It was his fervent belief in the abilities of his men to fight and win against all odds that wore down his army. Nearly a century and a half after his death, Robert E. Lee remains a source of fascination. This film examines the life of the general whose military successes made him the hero of the Confederacy, and who was elevated to almost god-like status by his admirers after his death.

About AMERICAN EXPERIECE Television's most-watched history series, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE has been hailed as "peerless" (Wall Street Journal), "the most consistently enriching program on television" (Chicago Tribune), and "a beacon of intelligence and purpose" (Houston Chronicle).
