EXAMINE THE TELESCOPE - FROM THE GROUND UP - IN "PBS EXPLORER COLLECTION - STARGAZING"
Available on DVD from PBS Distribution August 23rd

Arlington, Va. - July 14, 2011 - PBS Distribution today announced it is releasing PBS Explorer Collection: Stargazing on DVD. From exploring the history of the telescope to examining the wonders of the night sky, this collection provides serious and amateur stargazers with information about the telescope and how it has changed our understanding of our place in the universe. The five-disc collection will be available on August 23, 2011 for a suggested retail price of $49.99. It has a running time of 390 minutes.

Information about each of the five programs included in this set is below.

* "NOVA: Telescope: Hunting the Edge of Space" - This program takes viewers on a global adventure of discovery, exploring the rich history of the telescope. Then NOVA explores a new generation of ever-larger telescopes, poised to reveal answers to longstanding questions about our universe, and, in turn, to raise new questions.
* "NOVA: Hubble's Amazing Rescue" - In the spring of 2009, NASA sent a shuttle crew on a risky mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope for the last time. The astronaut servicing team carried out the first ever in-space repairs of Hubble's defective instruments, tasks that required ingenious engineering fixes and the most intensive NASA spacewalk ever. NOVA presents the inside story of the mission and the extraordinary challenges faced by the rescue crew.
* "400 Years of the Telescope" - This documentary follows the history of the telescope from the days of Copernicus to recent findings from the Hubble Telescope.
* "The Journey to Palomar" - The film traces the story of astronomer George Ellery Hale, considered the father of astrophysics, as he struggled personally and professionally to build the greatest telescopes of the 20th century at the Yerkes and Mount Wilson Observatories, and finally, the 20-year effort to build the million-pound telescope on Palomar mountain beginning in the 1930s.
* "Seeing in the Dark" - This film celebrates the wonders of stargazing - from kids learning the constellations to amateur astronomers doing professional-grade research in discovering planets and exploding stars.
