Based on a play by Frank Wedekind (Spring Awakening, Pandora's Box), this erotic thriller follows four characters (a brothel owner, a reformer, a young prostitute, and a young student) engaged in a psychological game of cat-and-mouse in a turn-of-the-century brothel.



The Little Death: Unrated Director's Cut comes packed with special features, including deleted scenes (14 minutes of footage, 9 different scenes); a behind-the-scenes documentary that includes interviews with the cast and crew; "The Other Half" (2008, 17 min.), a short film by Bret Wood; and a theatrical trailer. The street date for the DVD is February 21, 2012, with a SRP of $19.95.

Adapted from the play Death and Devil by Frank Wedekind, combined with elements of Anton Chekhov's short story "A Nervous Breakdown", The Little Death tells the story of Eleanor, a privileged social reformer (Courtney Patterson), who ventures into a Victorian-era brothel to rescue a young woman (Christie Vozniak) who appears to be held in there against her will in captivity. There, she confronts the owner of the establishment, Casti-Piani (Daniel May), and engages in a heated debate on sexual politics, morality, religion... and Eleanor's own sexual desires.

Meanwhile, a group of students pay a visit to the brothel with their shy and inexperienced friend Cyril (Clifton Guterman). Disgusted by the tawdriness of it all, Cyril nevertheless manages to find one woman who interests him: a girl who is just as disenchanted as he is -- a girl named Lisiska -- the very girl whom Eleanor has come to rescue. Once Cyril and Lisiska are alone, Eleanor peeks at the young lovers through a concealed window. But no one -- not Eleanor, Casti-Piani, or Cyril -- is prepared for what happens when Lisiska reveals her true self, and allows the Little Death to descend.

Rather than open up Wedekind's play and expand it beyond the confines of the brothel, writer/director Bret Wood emphasizes the claustrophobic interiors of the dark bordello, imbuing the film with a nightmarish quality that perfectly suits the battles being waged between good and evil, between vice and virtue.

Wood's previous credits include the 2006 feature Psychopathia Sexualis (which Sight and Sound called a "remarkably mature and beautifully photographed debut...balancing fresh cinematic techniques with silent influences and devices"). Filmmaker Magazine called Wood's 2003 documentary Hell's Highway: The True Story of Highway Safety Films, "a Lynchian view of the nightmarish underbelly of middle America." Wood's essays on film history have appeared in Sight and Sound, Film Comment, Positif, and Video Watchdog. He is currently editing the collected works of writer William Lindsay Gresham, and developing a film adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla.
