The Spectre of Hope brings together art critic John Berger, best known for his television series and book, Ways of Seeing, and Brazilian economist turned photographer Sebastiao Salgado, who has been awarded virtually every major photography prize in Europe and the United States.

Sitting at the kitchen table of Berger's home in the Swiss Alps, they look at the photographs in Salgado's book Migrations. Their intimate conversation, intercut with photographs from Migrations, combines a discussion of Salgado's work with a critique of globalization, and a wide-ranging investigation of photography and the power of the image.

The New York Times wrote of Migrations, "Salgado's . . . photographs do not call for action so much as for a change in consciousness." In The Spectre of Hope, Salgado and Berger discuss the potential of photography to have an actual impact on the world and how it is seen, in this case bringing conditions of famine and poverty to the attention of a jaded first world in a profound and arresting way.

Writing for The Vancouver Sun, Katherine Monk called THE SPECTRE OF HOPE, "A truly beautiful film about ugliness... from starving children in Rwanda to images of Bosnia, Salgado finds the human face of world politics -- and it's not a happy one. Through Salgado's stirring, human frames it all hits home -- and hits hard."
