With The Salt of Life, Di Gregorio has created another sparkling comic ode to the ladies in his life--but this time he plays middle-aged retiree Gianni, who has become invisible to all the women of Rome, regardless of age or relation.
In his day-to-day existence, Gianni must contend with an aristocratic, spendthrift mother (again played by Lunch's great nonagenarian Valeria de Franciscis Bendoni); a wife who is more patronizing friend than romantic partner; an ambivalent, slacker daughter (played by Di Gregorio's real-life daughter); and a wild party-girl neighbor who uses him...as a dog walker. Watching his codger friends snare beautiful younger women on the sun-kissed cobblestones of Trastevere, Gianni tries his polite, utterly gracious best to generate some kind of extracurricular love life--with both hilarious and poignant results.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR The Salt of Life "CRITIC'S PICK.
The movie's sensuous appreciation of ripeness and abundance extends to food, clothing and foliage; the lushness of a city in bloom virtually bursts from the screen." --Stephen Holden, The New York Times "FULL OF LAUGHS! The pixie-dust ending will leave you smiling...and likely singing an unexpected tune."--Paul D'Agostino, The L Magazine "RUEFUL, FUNNY AND WISE.... A warm yet melancholy film of quiet yet inescapable charm, it has a feeling for character and personality that couldn't be more delicious." --Kenneth Turan, The LA Times "LIKE A RICH HOME-COOKED MEAL! Charming.... Both a triumph over and cautionary illustration of the aging uomo." --Dennis Harvey, San Francisco Bay Guardian "A RAMBLING ROCOCO PLEASURE!" --Craig D. Lindsey, Nashville Scene "FUNNY, POIGNANT, LIFE-ENHANCING, AND MUCH CHEAPER THAN A TICKET TO ITALY! Di Gregorio, like Nanni Moretti or Woody Allen, Di Gregorio mines his own long-suffering face and character for comedy, and he has such a sympathetic presence and charm." --Screen International "A GENTLY OBSERVED AND WELL-ACTED TALE." --New York Magazine "IMBUED WITH GENTLE HUMOR and a kind of bittersweet resignation."--Stephen Rea, The Philadelphia Inquirer "FULL OF LOW-KEY BUT TELLING OBSERVATIONS, mostly about Gianni•s plight but also about modern life in general." --Walter Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle "A WINNING TALENT! It's two fine comedies in a row for Di Gregorio, previously touted for Mid-August Lunch.... The Salt of Life deftly sprinkles wacky humor in with the melancholy." --Gerald Peary, The Boston Phoenix "HILARIOUS! DON•T MISS THIS MOVIE!" --Italians in Film "CHARMING! Picture a combo of [Woody] Allen, Jacques Tati, and Marcello Mastroianni at his most self- deprecating. Di Gregorio is definitely onto something here." --Kelly Vance, East Bay Express "EASYGOING AND NATURALISTIC! Di Gregorio conjures a Rome that•s homey and literally warm." --Mark Jenkins, NPR.org "DI GREGORIO KEEPS THE ACTION AND THE JOKES LISSOME AND FLUID.... As actor, director and writer, he approaches the idea of ever-present longing with the suppleness of a dancer." --Stephanie Zacharek, Movieline "GIANNI DI GREGORIO PROVES THAT THE DELICATE TOUCH AND COMIC UNDERSTATEMENT of his acclaimed directorial debut, Mid-August Lunch, were anything but beginner's luck." --The Hollywood Reporter
