This is a documentary about 16 porn stars...I don't need to say another word.

Movie Grade: B

DVD Grade: B

Regardless of the genre, when a movie is titled Aroused, it’s a pretty solid expectation that there’s at least a little bit of titillation to be had. That’s certainly the case with this 2012 documentary that takes an up-close and intimate look at the lives of 16 female porn stars via stylistic interviews. However, if you’re looking for actual footage of these ladies “at work,” you’re in the wrong place, as filmmaker Deborah Anderson instead shows us mostly interesting and revealing discussions with the following starlets: Allie Haze, Asphyxia Noir, Alexis Texas, Teagan Presley, Francesca Le, Katsuni, Lexi Belle, Misty Stone, April O’Neil, Ash Hollywood, Belladonna, Brooklyn Lee, Jesse Jane, Kayden Kross, Lisa Ann, and Tanya Tate.

Anderson’s audio/video introduction of the film is a little off-putting at first, coming across as an unnecessary, self- aggrandizing segment for her. It instantly puts the female subjects on the back-burner, but, fortunately, once this intro is finished, the important people are the focal point and allowed to shine with all of their interesting charisma. Still, a film like Aroused creates an internal struggle of sorts in the minds of those who enjoy watching these ladies do what they do. If we’re accustomed to seeing these lovely ladies do what they do on-screen, just how, ahem, aroused, can we be by them once we see them speaking to us about the real world and not delivering horrid, scripted lines before taking all of their clothes off? Fortunately, Anderson seems to be well-aware of such thoughts and presents them, first, in a bathrobe, being made-up, and then, lying in a bed, naked, for a photo shoot, thus preserving how some of us may have come to know them in the past, whilst presenting them in an entirely new light as well.

Ketchup Entertainment’s Aroused DVD presents the film in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and the mostly black and white images feature nice detail throughout. Contrast levels are top-notch, as well, and the few colors that snuck into the production are well-rendered. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track only really springs to life for the film’s music, which does make its way to the rear speakers occasionally. As far as overall sound goes, Aroused is all about dialogue, and, fortunately, the ladies’ speech is always crystal clear and easy to understand. The only extra is the trailer for Aroused.
