Silver Spring, MD -- Tracing the development of art and architecture during the early medieval period, The Dark Ages: An Age of Light debuts on DVD on October 15, 2013 from Athena, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. British art critic Waldemar Januszczak (Every Picture Tells a Story, Vincent: The Full Story) hosts this four-part documentary covering early Christian iconography to the emergence of Islamic art, demonstrating that the "Dark Ages" produced masterpieces around the world. Broadcast on BBC4 in Nov. 2012, the DVD 2-disc set features four episodes available to U.S. audiences for the first time, plus bonus 12-page viewer's guide ($49.99, AcornOnline.com).

The early Middle Ages have been dismissed as a step backwards for civilization--a barbaric time in which warfare and conquest eclipsed learning and progress. But were the "Dark Ages" really so bleak? Art historian Waldemar Januszczak (Every Picture Tells a Story) says no, then takes us on an artistic journey back to this much-maligned epoch to reveal the evidence. He travels from Britain to North Africa and from Byzantium to Spain, finding beauty and refinement where one might have expected only brutality and destruction.

With Januszczak as an affable and gregarious guide, witness the mysteries of early Christian art, Islam's masterly mosques, intricate Anglo-Saxon metalwork, and the painstakingly illuminated Lindisfarne Gospels. Along the way, discover that the people who rose from the ashes of the Roman Empire did not lack for wisdom or beauty--they created their own age of light.

Writer and filmmaker Waldemar Januszczak has been the art critic for the Sunday Times (U.K.) since 1992. He has twice been honored as Critic of the Year by the Press Association of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Athena previously released his popular documentary Every Picture Tells a Story as a DVD 2-Vol. boxed set in June 2009 ($39.99).

EPISODES: The Clash of the Gods, What the Barbarians Did for Us, The Wonder of Islam, The Men of the North

BONUS FEATURES: 12-page booklet with a timeline of the Dark Ages; articles on Christendom, Islam's Golden Age, and the Byzantine Empire; and a glossary of barbarians; Biography of Waldemar Januszczak
